Annual Regattas - Saltwater Challenge and Henley on the Maribyrnong

The Essendon Rowing Club hosts two regattas annually. Our historic Henley on the Maribyrnong Regatta (HOM) that has been running since 1912 and our Saltwater Challenge Regatta (SWC) which was created in 2002 by long-standing member Frank Camiller.

The two regattas couldn't be more different. The HOM regatta, held annually in March, is a tightly contested sprint regatta only 350m in distance (approx. 1.5 - 2 mins race duration). Racing starts from the Anglers Tavern with the finish line in front of the Essendon Rowing Club. Competitors race up to three abreast in what is a great day for rowers and spectators alike.

The SWC regatta, held on the second Saturday in September annually, is a head race 4.5kms long (approx. 15 - 20 mins race duration). Racing starts at the Canning Street bridge and crews are set off 20 seconds apart. The spectator excitement is generally found on the corners where the coxens' steering skills can win or lose a race.
